Civil Services in India is the epitome of all services. It is the backbone of Indian administration, the very fabric which is the lifeline of the nation. The 4 major foundational pillars of the elite civil services in the country are Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and Indian Foreign Service (IFS). Appointments to crucial government organizations such as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) are also done through civil services including deputation postings at international organizations such as United Nations (UN), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank. There are other affiliated services such as Indian Railway administration, Audit & Accounts, Defence administration, Ordnance Factories administration etc.

The officers are selected through the civil services examination which is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year and appointed to Group ‘A’ cadre by the President of India. Few Group ‘B’ cadres are also included in the national civil services.
